With the ultimate goal of designing India’s first truly Indigenous Conventional Submarine, MDL is in the process of setting up a State of the Art Design and Engineering Centre for the design of Submarines in India. And while the Midget Submarine will be proof of design capability, MDL will ultimately strive to design an Indigenous Conventional Submarine and a host of other underwater platforms.

The Midget Submarine Program is MDL’s flagship R&D program and is poised to propel MDL into an elite international league of Submarine Designers in addition to its proven credentials of being the Submarine Builder to the nation. The program, which was initiated in 2021, has now reached its first milestone with the commencement of prototype construction in July 2022. With this great stride, MDL aims to turn India truly “Atmanirbhar” in the field of Submarines.
